♥ Five Ways to Help Baby Sleep ♥
Easy steps to bedtime bliss.

1. Stick to a regular bedtime. Aim for 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., not later. “There’s a window of opportunity for sleep,” says Jodi Mindell, Ph.D., a sleep specialist at Children’s
2. Create a soothing routine. Even a child who is only a few months old will take comfort in such routines as a warm bath, a story, or a lullaby.
3. Use room-darkening shades. These can help sensitive babies sleep longer, especially during the summer months.
4. Look for your infant’s sleepy signals: crankiness, rubbing her eyes, a slight drop in consciousness. Often babies who are ready to drift off will suddenly widen their eyes and then close them hard, a cue that parents sometimes miss.
5. Make bedtime a pleasant experience. Your infant will pick up on your tension if you approach the evening with dread. Try to stay relaxed, says Rafael Pelayo, M.D., a sleep specialist at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic, in Palo Alto, California. An alternative: Put your baby in his crib, sit in his room, and listen to soft music or have a quiet conversation with your spouse. Your child can still drift off, and you won’t be so focused on his falling asleep.

♥ Heathy Snacks for Uber-Busy Moms ♥
Sure, you pay attention to every morsel your kid eats, but during a jam-packed day of work or running around, it’s all too easy to forget about nourishing yourself. The result? A frenzied trip to the drive-thru or vending machine after you suddenly realize you’re starvation central. “The worst thing you can do is go too long without eating,” says Keri Glassman, RD, a NYC-based dietitian (and mom to a 5-year-old and 17-month-old). “Then not only do you overeat, but you binge on unhealthy foods full of sugar and empty calories.”
“As a general rule, try to eat something every two to four hours. Selecting snacks at about 150 calories or less per serving will keep your hunger at bay without widening your waistline. Since you’re so swamped, we tapped experts for picks that multitask accordingly: Most are kid-friendly and nonperishable, so you can tuck them away in your diaper bag, car, or desk and not think about restocking every morning. Here are some satisfying snacks you can feel good about munching on.”
CEREAL

Divvy up a serving of your favorite flakes into little baggies for a stand-alone crunchy snack. Most cereals are fortified with essential nutrients like folic acid and other vitamins and minerals; your healthiest bets are also low in added sugar, high in fiber, and made with heart-healthy whole grains, like MultiGrain Cheerios, Product 19, Kashi GoLean, Fiber One Honey Clusters, Raisin Bran, and Quaker Oatmeal Squares. Pack your snack with a yummier nutritional punch by tossing in a few nuts for extra flavor (the protein will help stave off hunger longer).
SOY CRISPS

If you can’t eat just one, consider switching from potato or tortilla chips to soy crisps. A huge 140-calorie-ish portion generally packs only 2 grams of fat and as much as 10 grams of healthy soy protein, depending on the brand. So you can munch away and feel like you’re eating a ton without any guilt about the grease factor.
YOGURT SMOOTHIES

If you can’t eat just one, consider switching from potato or tortilla chips to soy crisps. A huge 140-calorie-ish portion generally packs only 2 grams of fat and as much as 10 grams of healthy soy protein, depending on the brand. So you can munch away and feel like you’re eating a ton without any guilt about the grease factor.
100-CALORIE CHOCOLATE

Can’t shake a chocolate craving? No need to deny it. “You’re better off addressing it or else you’ll end up overindulging later on,” says Felicia Stoler,
STRING CHEESE

Your kids love this fun-to-peel snack, but it’s also a healthy choice for you. String cheese can stay out of the fridge a couple of hours, making it an ideal mid-morning nibble. A part-skim stick contains about 50 to 70 calories and 4 to 5 grams of fat, along with calcium for healthy bones and muscles and hunger-quenching protein. Pair it with a few whole-grain crackers to fulfill a crunch craving.
FRUIT

Pretty much a no-brainer, fruit like apples, pears and oranges are a busy-mom snack staple. These don’t spoil easily, so you can toss in your bag or leave at your desk for a few days at least. Medium-sized apples and pears pack about 100 calories each (about 65 for a medium orange) with lots of fiber and essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
WHOLE-GRAIN SNACK BAR

When you’re in rush-rush-rush mode (and don’t even have the time to, say, dunk carrots in hummus), snack bars are the perfect grab-and-go choice. “I leave six different bars in my car, so I know there’s something there to stop me from running into a convenience store when I’m out and hungry,” says Stoler. (And stashing them in the diaper bag is a great way to head off a hungry-toddler tantrum.)
But with hundreds of options out there — many loaded with a surprising amount of calories, sugar, and fat — looking at labels is key to making a healthy choice. Go for brands with less than 15 grams of sugar, at least 4 grams of fiber, and about 150 calories, like Kashi’s TLC Chewy Granola Bars, those from Gnu Foods and those Glassman creates for her clients (now available for sale on her Web site).
Hope these snacks had satisfied your taste bud!

♥ Biting and Hitting Tots ♥
What to do when your toddler hits and bites?

Here are some quick advices.
1.) Call a time-out. If you see your child hitting, biting, or spitting, stop the behavior immediately. Try to speak calmly, but if your child doesn’t listen, take her aside and say, “You’re out of control. You need a time-out to calm down.”
2.) Don’t demand an explanation. Asking a child why he did something wrong implies that there may be times when it’s okay to be mean. That’s not to say you shouldn’t look for a cause. If your kid pulled his friend’s hair because his pal was hogging the swing, do help them take turns after you’ve dealt with the hair-pulling. “This shows kids they live in a just world and that if they tell you about something unfair or upsetting, you’ll try to fix it,” explains Dr. Dix.
3.) Try not to lose it. Some kids believe that any kind of attention beats no attention at all. So if you freak out when your child does something wrong, she’ll be intrigued (”Wow, Mommy went crazy!”) and she’ll have incentive to act up again.
4.) Tie kids’ actions to other people’s feelings. Toddlers have a limited understanding of how their behavior affects others. Your child needs to know how his friend felt when he got kicked. Say, “That hurt Sam and made him feel bad.” Tell him you know it’s hard to share, but kicking someone is not the right thing to do.
5.) Help your child calm down. Toddlers get just as upset as adults do when they lose control. After a brief time-out, talk to your child in a comforting and compassionate way. Say, “I know it feels terrible to get so upset and make someone else feel bad.” This helps kids understand their emotions and learn to label them.
6.) Don’t force kids to include others. Sometimes, your child may act like a bully by excluding other kids, but it’s actually a normal part of social development, says Dr. Carr. “In a small group, toddlers get their friends’ approval when they tell another child he can’t play,” he says. “By excluding someone, your child is saying ‘You’re special’ to the kids she’s already playing with.” The solution: Find a time when your child and her left-out buddy are apart and let her know that you saw what happened — and that excluding someone isn’t nice.
7.) Start teaching problem-solving skills. Do make it fun: Use imaginary play to help your child learn positive ways to resolve a sticky situation. You might pretend to be another child who has taken your toddler’s favorite toy. Teach him how to use his words (”That’s my toy — please give it back”), and if that doesn’t work, tell him he should ask an adult for help. Act out these scenes often so that the lessons sink in. Just keep trying — and soon you’ll have a really sweet kid.
